A LOOK BACK AT THE WOMEN'S AMATEUR
Betty Probasco of Lookout Mountain won this championship in four generations, beginning in 1954. She won her record eighth in 1986. Judy Eller Street is the tournament's youngest champion. She won her first of seven championships at the age of 15 in 1956. The tournament got its start in 1916 at Memphis Country Club when the Women's Tennessee Golf Association (WTGA) was organized. The first champion was Marguerite Gaut. The tournament was played intermittenly until Mrs. Scott "Betty" Probasco re-organized the Association in 1937. Mrs. Gaut defeated Mrs. Probasco for her fifth of six titles at Chattanooga Golf and Country Club in 1937. Since then the Women's State has been held each year with the exception of four during World War II. In 2000, the WTGA was absorbed by the Tennessee Golf Association.
